A Promise Kept:

Sunshine Children’s Home

Need for a children’s home in Butler County:

  • 30% of population in county are children
  • Butler County SRS had 768 assigned cases concerning children's welfare in 2010.
  • Butler County abuse reports are surpassed only by those counties surrounding Wichita, Salina and Kansas City.
  • Presently children are taken to Wichita Children’s Home:
    • 49 children from the 13th Judicial District admitted in 2010
    • Increased time and expense for transport by law enforcement
    • Children separated from school, family support and often, siblings
  • Annual fundraiser, the Buckaroo Ball, has raised approximately $220,000 as seed money for the construction of Sunshine Children’s Home.

Current Progress:

  • Task force formed in November 2008 comprised of 15 community volunteers, SCARF board members and related agency employees, completed by WSU in March 2009.
  • Needs assessment completed by Wichita State University.
  •         GLMV Architecture provided preliminary phase renderings (seen here).
  •         Hope Community Church of Andover donated 3 acres of land.

Future Work:
