A Promise Kept:

Sunshine Children’s Home

Need for a children’s home in Butler County:

  • 30% of population in county are children
  • Over 1,100 children were identified as potential victims of abuse and neglect by Butler County SRS in 2007.
  • Butler County abuse reports are surpassed only by those counties surrounding Wichita, Salina and Kansas City.
  • Presently children are taken to Wichita Children’s Home:
    • 49 Butler County children serviced in 2008
    • Increased time and expense for transport by law enforcement
    • Children separated from school, family support and often, siblings
  • Annual fundraiser, the Buckaroo Ball, has raised approximately $50,000 as seed money for the purchase and/or construction of Sunshine Children’s Home.

Current Progress:

  • Task force formed in November 2008 comprised of 15 community volunteers, SCARF board members and related agency employees, led by Butler County attorney, Jan Satterfield and SCARF’s Executive Director, Suzi Thien
  • Needs assessment close to completion by Wichita State University
  • Task force visited existing facilities

Future Work:

  • Research licensing requirements
  • Complete economic feasibility study
  • Complete capital campaign feasibility study
  • Select architectural firm
  • Research real estate purchase
